A tourist visiting a Romanian resort town was prompted to take action when she spotted a stray dog she had been seeing on the street. Knowing the animal rescue Howl Of A Dog often assisted street dogs in the country, she contacted them about the dog.
Rescuers drove two hours to town and found the dog sleeping in an alcove with cardboard and pillows on the floor.
“When we got there, we were told by the locals that the dog had been living in that neighborhood for years and that everyone there seemed to know her,” howling a dog wrote on YouTube.
“Helen, as we later named it, was one of the lucky strays, regarded by the locals as the ‘dog next door’, she had a place of relative safety and received food scraps from passersby,” they continued.
“But life on the street is tough, especially for an older dog like Helen, who has to deal with cold winters, rain and storms without any medical care, and always get hit by cars or The danger of being harmed by people who are not so caring about animals.”
When rescuers fed her and put her on a leash, it was as if she knew what they were doing there.
She didn’t resist – her street life was over.
At the veterinarian, they checked the plastic tags on Helen’s ear – part of a neutral release program that didn’t take place until 2013. This means that Helen has been living on the street alone for at least 6 years.
Back at their shelter, the dogs howl marveled at Helen’s sweet nature.
It’s hard to find the right words to describe Helen, she’s absolutely an amazing dog: so calm and friendly with everyone, and so polite,” they wrote. “A wonderful, cheerful demeanor. “
Helen now has a chance to live the second part of her life loved and cared for by the right family, she is currently in the care of Howl Of A Dog in Romania, but she can be adopted internationally to the US, Canada and Europe.
