Meet Burreaux, a sweet black labrador puppy who tried his hardest to smile at everyone who passed by his kennel in the hopes of being adopted.
Courtney Wingate, the director of the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, spotted the trio of puppies one day while walking past a local animal control center and knew she couldn’t leave them behind. She took all three puppies in, but it was Burreaux’s endearing smile that drew her attention.
As a result, Courtney contacted volunteer Sarrah Walton, who came to the rescue and named the puppies after three Louisiana State University football players.
The three were whisked away to the veterinarian for routine examinations, and everything appeared to be in order. Burreaux, however, became ill when they returned to the rescue center.
They immediately returned him to the animal hospital, where he was treated and made a full recovery.
Sarrah began to notice Burreaux’s wide smile whenever someone spoke to him in a high pitched voice after the trio returned to the rescue shelter.
He would flash his tiny teeth in a huge grin whenever someone called him a good boy. Sarrah, speaking to The Dodo, said:
“It’s whenever you’re talking real sweet to him … he gets this smile like he wants something. [It’s] like he’s telling you, ‘Come pet me, come love me.’”
When the pups were ready for adoption, the rescue decided that the best way to find them a forever home would be to share their special skills on social media.
Joe was a natural at fetch and was quickly adopted after a video of his abilities was shared.
The shelter’s staff decided to share a video of Burreuax flashing his huge adorable smile to demonstrate his sweet nature.
“[W]e were thinking, ‘Burreaux wants a home so bad that he’s always smiling, trying to cute it up’. So we took that video.”
