Macy, a Yorkie puppy, has been hailed a hero for saving her 10-year-old human from a coyote.
The incident was caught on video, and it shows Lily Kwan, 10, and Macy, 10, walking around their Toronto neighborhood when a coyote starts chasing them.
Lily begins to scream for help before letting go of Macy’s leash in the hopes of enlisting the assistance of a neighbor.
Macy began fighting the coyote to protect her young human at this point. “I ran to the sidewalk and started screaming for help,” Lily said to reporters from News 6. No one seemed to hear me. I just saw a coyote attempting to attack my dog, and I tried ringing doorbells and knocking on doors, but only one neighbor actually let me in.”
“I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote,” says the owner. “She’s a super brave dog, I love her so much.”
Macy was able to save Lily from the coyote, but it was not without cost. She sustained injuries to her leg and torso, necessitating surgery.
Dorothy Kwan, Lily’s mother, started a GoFundMe page with a $10,000 goal to pay for the surgery. They easily exceeded this and are now at $38,500, $2000 short of the new goal.
“My dog would do anything for our family, so I’m actually not surprised that she did that,” Dorothy told News 6. “She’s our little heroine,” says the narrator.
“I never would have guessed a coyote would come out during the day, especially with someone screaming and yelling,” she says. “It just kept coming after her and our dog, despite all the yelling, it was quite aggressive.”
We’ve always known that dogs are fiercely loyal, but this is a great reminder to never take them for granted! Congratulations, Macy!
