Most rescue dogs whose lives are saved when they are sprung from the shelter have a lot to be grateful for, and four-year-old Pit Bull, McKenzie, is one of them. McKenzie’s owner describes her as a happy-go-lucky, energetic dog who enjoys being petted. To that list of incredible qualities, the title of “hero” can now be added.
Sadie Peterson claims the dog was out for her nightly walk with the family’s 13-year-old daughter in the Lake Waukomis area of Missouri when a man appeared out of nowhere and approached the girl. He was mumbling incoherently and lurking in the backyard’s wooded area.
“I heard McKenzie growl and bark like I’ve never heard her do before,” Peterson said. “Because she is Maggie’s dog, she obviously sensed her person was in danger.”
Even more incredible, McKenzie stood between the man and the girl, while Peterson assisted the girl inside so she could dial 911. Despite the fact that the rescue Pit Bull was never trained to be a guard dog, she trusted her instincts that night, and it paid off.
Thankfully, the suspect was apprehended a few blocks away and arrested, but not charged in this case. The man was allegedly under the influence of drugs.
McKenzie received extra scritches behind the ear and extra time on the couch with them, according to Peterson. You’ve done a fantastic job, sweet pooch!
