It’s always heartbreaking when someone abandons their pet. It is your responsibility to properly surrender your pet to a shelter or find them a new home if you can no longer care for it.
However, one heartbreaking viral photo depicts an abandoned little dog tied to a fire hydrant by her previous owner. Fortunately, the dog is now in good hands.
Baby Girl, a tan mixed-breed, was found tied to a yellow fire hydrant in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The dog had a note explaining that the owners could no longer care for the dog, as well as a backpack full of the dog’s treats, toys, and food, according to WFRV Local 5.
While it’s clear the owners had their reasons and believed they were acting responsibly, Kyle Rose Engelhardt, a local woman who discovered the dog and shared the story on Facebook, was taken aback.
“Cannot believe someone could do this,” she wrote, asking if anyone recognized the abandoned dog.
Kylie called the cops and took Baby Girl to the Wisconsin Humane Society, where she was taken in and is now “doing great” in stray hold, according to the chevalier.
While this wasn’t the most responsible way to part with a dog, and many people were outraged by the story, the Humane Society was more sympathetic to the owners, writing directly to them on Facebook:
First and foremost, we are heartbroken that you had to part goodbye to your best friend. It’s clear how much you cared for her, and we can see you tried your hardest despite your own medical issues and life challenges. We can see your love in the bag you carefully packed with her favorite items. We can see your love in the way you secured her leash to prevent her from being hit by a car. We can see your love for her in the way you placed her in the middle of a neighborhood where she’d be found quickly. Your love is evident in how happy and healthy Baby Girl appears. We can see your love in the note you left for her, pleading for someone to help her when you couldn’t.
Despite the fact that the Humane Society allows anonymous surrenders and will not let surrender fees “be a barrier,” they told the owners that they were “grateful for your compassion.”
Baby Girl is now receiving a lot of attention from the staff, and she has a “bright future ahead of her,” they wrote.
We’re sure Baby Girl was heartbroken and confused after being left alone for so long. However, it is clear that the owners could no longer care for her, and everything worked out in the end.
We hope Baby Girl is doing well and will soon find a new home.
