The puppies were under the ground after loose soil slid, but their mom howled at the top of her lungs for help.
Earlier this week, while working on a remote farm in Turkey, veterinarian Soner Büyümez heard a sound in the distance that he couldn’t ignore. It sounded desperate, like a cry for help.
“I ran to the spot right away,” Büyümez told The Dodo. “There was a landslide. I noticed a dog trapped in the ground. “Only her head was left [above the soil].”
The dog was in pain. But, as Büyümez would soon discover, she wasn’t only concerned with her own life.
“It was very upsetting when I first saw her,” Büyümez said.
He knew he had to act. Büyümez quickly grabbed a shovel and began digging.
Another sound reached Büyümez’s ears as he moved the dirt that was trapping the dog. The sound was faint but distinct.
“I heard the cry of puppies,” Büyümez explained. “They were beneath the earth.”
Büyümez began digging again after the first dog was safely removed in order to save her babies.
Büyümez saved seven puppies who had been buried alive after their underground burrow caved in, much to their mother’s relief.
The furry family was now safe and sound thanks to Büyümez’s quick thinking.
Büyümez believes the mother dog was a stray who had to fend for herself in that desperate situation. But she and her babies will no longer be alone.
“Their overall condition is excellent. The mother and her puppies were safe “said Büyümez. “I will look after them as if they were my own.”
