Ladybird, a 9-year-old black Labrador, was discovered tethered to a public restroom in Destrehan’s Splash Park in Louisiana.
She had food and water by her side, and a note attached to her that said, “Be nice 2 dog – got stuck no car – be back soon – give my dog some water – be back in morning.”
Because the note’s content was somewhat illegible, the local animal control assumed Ladybird had been abandoned and dutifully transferred her to a rescue called St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter.
The next morning, however, they received a call from the dog’s true owner, who had indeed bicycled to the park to retrieve Ladybird!
The man was guided to the rescue by animal control, and the workers finally learned about his heartbreaking ordeal.
He revealed in a heartfelt conversation that he had rescued Ladybird when she was only 6 weeks old. The two had spent the previous nine years traveling across the country as adventurers.
However, he recently fell on hard times and things began to go south.
The owner was currently homeless and without a car, so he left Ladybird at the public restroom to seek help.
He intended to relocate to North Carolina with his dog, where he had family who were eager to help him in getting back on his feet.
He was still stuck in Louisiana, however, because he lacked transportation.
The workers could tell the man cared about Ladybird and didn’t want her to suffer in her golden years.
They decided to help him in getting Ladybird to his family’s home in North Carolina after much deliberation.
The best part was that several other rescues, including “Turning Rescues into Pets,” “GreaterGood,” and “Wings Of Rescue,” volunteered to help!
