Many times, when a stray dog is found on train tracks, passengers on board the train arrive late to their destination because the train comes to a halt while authorities remove the dog. Another common outcome is a sad one, in which the train continues on its path and passengers only feel a bump on the tracks. The second option, killing the dog on the tracks, was not an option for a train conductor in Santiago, Chile.
While the man could have called authorized personnel to remove and rescue the dog, the driver instead stopped the train, descended on the tracks and rescued the dog himself.
The heroic act was recorded by train commuter Vanesa Lira Machuca and later uploaded her Facebook account.
On the video, you can see the hero man approach the scared pooch. The man calls the dog over, but when it does not respond, he slowly reaches for the dog, hoping not to be bitten. Fortunately, the dog welcomed the rescue, and the train conductor lifted the dog to safety by the skin of his neck. Another train worker picked up the dog and assisted in its rescue.
When the driver got back on the train, he made the following announcement:“I apologize for the delay, but I couldn’t just run over the dog.”
All passengers applauded the man. He truly is a hero!
